History, Experience & Leadership Counts!
I have nominated to represent the Port Adelaide area as a true Independent,
I served the local community for 12 years as Mayor of Port Adelaide Enfield.
My great-grandfather, William Bevan, arrived in Port Adelaide from Tasmania in 1845 and became a shunter. On his passing in 1904 the members from the Adelaide Working Men's Assoc, the precursor of the Maritime Union were called to follow the remains of their late brother to the Woodville Cemetary.
My Grandfather, Frederick Johanson, signed off in Port Lincoln in 1910 a Swedish sailor, an early Union Member, he settled in Port Adelaide, marrying my Grandmother in a Manse in Alberton in 1911. He passed away in the 1940's.
My Grandmother later remarried to Captain Walter (Wally) Todd, born 1883, and they lived in Deslandes St. Ethelton until 1974. He was a Master Mariner and a legend with the union movement.
My wife Vicky’s family still live in the family home in Blair Athol, where her parents settled from Europe after WWII.
I attended Seaton Boys Technical High School and have been associated with the Port all my life.
I am Patron of The Port Adelaide Sailing Club. Life member of the South Australian Trailer Boat Club, the Bosnian Assoc of SA, the Port Adelaide Football Club. Ex voluntary Board Member of Defence Reserves Support Council of SA, ICAN & Australia Day Council of SA. Current member of the Sporting Car Club, Street Machine Assoc of SA, Honda Car Club & Alfa Car Club.
My strong connection to Defence includes membership of the RSL. My Grandfather on my mother's side,
a Port Adelaide local, volunteered in WW1, he fought in the fiercest battles and
was injured many times. My father volunteered for the Army in WW2
and trained in Jungle Warfare in QLD. I was a long-time volunteer for the
Defence Reserves Support Council of SA until the government disbanded it.
During my time assisting the board I sailed out of Port Adelaide overnight on the HMAS voyage
of the Tobruk, I also went to the Solomon Islands with Defence to see the Reserves in their
peace keeping role as well as flying to Woomera with the Air Force to inspect facilities there.
I wrote to the Prime Minister to get Navy ships to re-visit the Port after it was being by- passed.
Just before leaving my Mayoral role I managed to get a friends fathers WW2 flying uniform, equipment and flight logs donated to the War Museum in Canberra, includimg his DFC medal that he received for
Reconnaissance over Normandy.
Also while Mayor I proposed that all councils in Australia should include in their workplace
agreements protection for the jobs of workers who are on Reserve duties or deployment,
This proposal was accepted by all councils in Australia as a result .
Married with 3 adult children, and co-owner of local successful business, for 32 years,
Paint Supplies with my wife Vicki.
For many years through my business I have sponsored or assisted clubs like the Port Adelaide Hockey Club and numerous other clubs, churches etc in and out the area.
I offer you my skills, experience, and passion for the Port and community service.
I ask for your support for a better Independent Port Adelaide.
